What a Great Guide Actually Does
They read people. Within an hour, a great guide knows whether you want silence and photography or conversation and history. They adjust. They're not delivering a script.
They know when to stop — and when not to. The best moment in Polonnaruwa might be 10 minutes sitting quietly in front of the Gal Vihara statues, not a 15-minute historical lecture while other jeeps pull up.
They know people. A local guide who's worked an area for years has relationships — the farmer who will let you walk his cinnamon plantation, the family who will invite you for tea, the monastery where the head monk speaks English. None of this is in a guidebook.
They're honest. If the road to your planned site is flooded, a great guide has a better alternative ready — not a panicked phone call to head office.
Questions to Ask Before You Book a Guide

- What languages do you guide in?
- Can we contact a previous guest for a reference?
- What happens if we want to change the itinerary?
What to Be Wary Of
Guides who work on commission from specific restaurants, shops, or hotels will steer you toward those places — whether or not they're right for you. Ask upfront: "Do you receive commission from any places you recommend?" The honest ones will tell you. The dishonest ones will deny it.
