Sri Lanka punches well above its weight when it comes to wildlife. This compact island has one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere in the world, and its national parks are home to elephants, sloth bears, blue whales, and an extraordinary diversity of birdlife.
Yala National Park
Sri Lanka's most famous park and one of the best places on earth to spot Sri Lankan leopards. Yala's dry-zone landscape of scrubland and lagoons also supports elephants, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species.
Best time to visit: February–July (dry season)
Safari duration: Half-day (6am departure recommended)
Udawalawe National Park
If elephants are your priority, Udawalawe is unmissable. Unlike the African savanna, here you can see herds of 50+ elephants in a single morning, often with young calves.

Wilpattu National Park
Sri Lanka's largest national park is far less visited than Yala but equally rewarding. Wilpattu is known for its unique natural lakes (villus) and offers excellent leopard and sloth bear sightings.
Minneriya & Kaudulla
Between July and October, the "Gathering" at Minneriya draws up to 300 wild elephants to the reservoir — one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in Asia.
Whale Watching
Mirissa (south coast) from November to April offers remarkable blue whale and sperm whale sightings. Trincomalee on the east coast is equally excellent from May to October.
