Here are the 7 things nobody puts in the brochure.
1. "Peak season" isn't universal
December to March is peak season for the south and west coast. But the east coast (Trincomalee, Pasikuda, Arugam Bay) is in off-season during these months. If you want east coast beaches — brilliant for snorkelling and far less crowded — plan for May to September. Don't assume Sri Lanka has one season.
2. The "romantic" beaches aren't all equal
Mirissa is beautiful but gets busy. Tangalle is quieter and the sunsets are better. Hiriketiya is stunning but the current can be strong. Pasikuda is calm, shallow, flat water — genuinely perfect for couples who aren't surfers. Tell us what kind of beach you want and we'll match you to the right one.
3. Long driving days kill the romance
We've seen itineraries planned by international agencies with 4-hour driving days back to back. By day 5 both people are exhausted and irritable. Sri Lanka is small but the roads take time. Build in slow days. A morning with nowhere to be is more valuable than another attraction ticked off.
4. "Surprise" upgrades need to be earned
Sri Lanka hotel staff are wonderfully generous — if you communicate. Tell us in advance if you want a flower-decorated room or a special dinner arrangement. We tell the hotel in advance, they prepare properly. Last-minute "surprises" at check-in are hit and miss. Let us set them up for you properly.
5. Dress codes at temples are non-negotiable
Even on honeymoon, even in the heat — covered shoulders and knees at every temple. Pack a light linen shirt and a sarong each. A sarong bought in Sri Lanka costs almost nothing and solves every temple dress code situation.
6. The best moments aren't on the itinerary
Your driver suggests a small detour to a waterfall that isn't in any guidebook. A local family invites you in for tea. You stay at the beach an hour longer than planned. These are the memories. Leave space for them. Don't over-schedule.
7. Book local
International honeymoon packages booked through UK or European agencies often have Sri Lanka handled by a sub-contracted local operator anyway. Cut out the middle tier. Book directly with a local operator (like us) and get the actual local knowledge — not a translated version of it.
