Your First Night in Negombo — What to Do After Landing in Sri Lanka

    5 min read

Most Sri Lanka travel guides start at Sigiriya. We start where you actually land — Negombo.

Bandaranaike International Airport sits just 8km from Negombo town. After a long flight, the last thing you want is a 2-hour drive to Colombo. The smart move? Stay your first night in Negombo, decompress, and start your adventure refreshed in the morning.

Getting from the Airport to Negombo

The drive takes about 20 minutes. Avoid the tuk-tuks waiting outside arrivals — they'll quote tourist prices. Pre-book your transfer through your tour operator (we include this free for all our guests) or use the official airport taxi counter inside the terminal.

Where to Eat Your First Sri Lankan Meal

Head straight to the Negombo Beach Road (Lewis Place). The fish is pulled out of the lagoon that morning. Try:

    • Sama's Restaurant for fresh grilled prawns and rice & curry
    • Lords Restaurant for a relaxed beachfront dinner
    • The local roti shops on Main Street if you want to eat like a local for under $3

Don't Miss: The Negombo Lagoon at Sunset

If you arrive before 5pm, ask your driver to take a small detour along the lagoon road. You'll see fishing boats returning, birds feeding, and the most peaceful introduction to Sri Lanka imaginable. No tour needed — just 20 minutes of your time.

What NOT to Do on Night One

    • Don't try to see the fish market at night — it's a morning thing (we're talking 5am)
    • Don't book a tuk-tuk tour from a stranger on the beach
    • Don't eat at the hotel if you can avoid it — the local spots are far better and cheaper

    The Next Morning

If you're heading on a longer tour, your driver will collect you from the hotel. If you have a free morning, the Negombo fish market (early!), St. Mary's Church, and the Dutch canal are all walkable from most hotels.

We're based right here in Negombo. If you need anything on arrival night — a restaurant recommendation, a trusted tuk-tuk driver, or just a question answered — WhatsApp us. We're local. We're awake.
