Here's everything we wish someone had told us — the complete, honest guide to the Kandy to Ella train ride, one of the world's most scenic rail journeys.
Route Overview
- Full route: Kandy → Nanu Oya (for Nuwara Eliya) → Haputale → Ella
- Duration: ~7 hours end to end (Kandy to Ella)
- Shorter scenic option: Nanu Oya to Ella (~3.5 hours) — this is the most spectacular stretch if you're short on time
The train winds through emerald tea plantations, misty mountain passes, waterfalls, tunnels carved through solid rock, and over dramatic viaducts including the iconic Nine Arch Bridge.
The Classes Explained Simply
- First Class Observation: Reserved seats, large windows, the best views. Book this. It costs about $10–15 USD.
- Second Class Reserved: Comfortable, cheaper, slightly less dramatic views — a solid choice if First Class is sold out.
- Second Class Unreserved: Unreserved but comfortable. Arrive early to get a window seat.
- Third Class Unreserved: The most authentic and atmospheric experience, but you may end up standing in a doorway for 6 hours. Some travellers love it — open doors, fresh mountain breeze. Most don't.
When to Book
Book 30–60 days ahead minimum, especially December–March and July–August. The Ella train is genuinely one of the world's most popular rail journeys now, and seats sell out fast. Tickets are released about 30 days in advance at the Colombo Fort railway station or online.
Which Side to Sit On
Travelling Kandy → Ella, sit on the right side of the train for the best valley and tea estate views.

Many people miss this. About 10 minutes before Ella station, the train crosses the Nine Arch Bridge. Move to the door area just before Ella and look back as the train curves across — the photo is extraordinary.

- Bring snacks and water — there's limited food onboard
- Wear layers — the Hill Country is significantly cooler than the coast, especially in the morning and after sunset
- Keep your phone charged — you'll take hundreds of photos
- Don't lean too far out — it's tempting, but dangerous on the bridges and tunnels
