Arugam Bay — AB, as the regulars call it — sits on Sri Lanka's southeast coast and has been a surf pilgrimage site since the 1970s.
The main point break here is genuinely world-class. But there are six or seven different breaks within a short tuk-tuk ride of the main bay — and choosing the right one matters enormously depending on your level.
The Breaks, Honestly
Main Point. The famous one. A long right-hand point break that on its best days produces 200-metre rides. This is intermediate to advanced territory. If you're still learning, watch from the beach and save Main Point for when you're ready.
Pottuvil Point. The most consistent break in the area. Works across a wide range of swell sizes. Good for intermediates. Less crowded than Main Point.
Whisky Point. About 7km north. More mellow wave shape. Good for beginners on smaller days. The beach here is one of the most beautiful on the east coast.
Elephant Rock. Unpredictable, hollow, powerful. Experienced surfers only.
Best Time to Surf Arugam Bay
April to October — the bay faces southeast and receives consistent swells from the Indian Ocean during these months. Peak season is July and August.
November to March — northeast monsoon makes the east coast rough. This is when the west coast surfs (Weligama, Hikkaduwa, Midigama).
Surf Schools and Board Rental
Arugam Bay has a reliable surf school scene. Lessons are affordable by any international standard. Board rental is widely available and inexpensive. Most beginner packages include board, lesson, and a couple of hours of guided practice.
For absolute beginners: 3 days in Arugam Bay is usually enough to stand up and catch your first waves properly. It's one of the better places in Asia to learn — long, manageable waves, warm water, no wetsuit needed.
Beyond the Waves
Arugam Bay is more than surfing. The beach café scene is excellent. Pottuvil Lagoon 2km north has incredible bird life and a peaceful boat safari in the early morning. Lahugala National Park nearby often has large elephant herds — less visited than Yala and worth a morning.
